Two more states, Tennessee and Montana, have passed comprehensive data privacy laws this week. That brings the total up to 9 states in the U.S., with Texas and Florida also seemingly on the cusp of passing their own laws within the coming month or so.

This continues the Spring 2023 trend of the United States becoming increasingly important in the global conversation on data protection, with 4 new laws on the books already and ongoing developments to the EU-US Privacy Framework looking like it will need further solutions to pass European courts.

While a federal law seems unlikely in the near future, if the U.S. can continue passing data privacy laws and bringing the topic to the forefront of the public's mind, data rights can take a big step forward this year.
