On July 5, 2022, the European Parliament adopted the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA). The two pieces of legislation aim to create a safer digital space for both individuals and businesses with a focus on big digital service providers. The DSA is concerned with harmful and illegal goods, services & content online,  banning dark patterns and targeted advertising aimed at children or based on sensitive data. Meanwhile, the DMA addresses competition and antitrust issues, and requires providing business users access to their data. Thierry Breton, EU industry chief, addressed enforcement concerns, stating that the "new harmonized rules will apply directly and uniformly anywhere in Europe."
